2018 Student Newspaper, 2019 Editor Receive Recognition

Ravenscroft's student newspaper, Nevarmore, received an "Honor" designation among small schools from across the state at the 2018 High School Journalism Awards, presented by the North Carolina Scholastic Media Association last summer.

NCSMA, a statewide organization that promotes excellence in scholastic journalism and encourages respect for freedom of the press, is affiliated with the highly regarded School of Media and Journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill and offers critique services to support students and staffs in their efforts to distinguish themselves and receive feedback for improvement. Awards are announced as part of the annual Summer Institute.

Nevarmore advisor Tomeiko Carter, who received this award in her first year at Ravenscroft, said, "It has been an inspiring journey, helping to develop already talented and motivated students. Although small in number, our staff has demonstrated a range of writing skills and a level of commitment befitting larger school organizations."

In addition, the editor of this year's Nevarmore staff, Sarabi Owens '20, has been accepted to The School of The New York Times' NYC Summer Academy for 2019. The academy gives intellectually curious high school students the opportunity to live and learn in New York City while studying topics in journalism, media, technology, arts, culture, sports, fashion, business, science and more. Each two-week course draws on the expertise and access of The New York Times and encourages students to take their learning beyond the classroom and into the real world.

This is Sarabi's second year of Upper School journalism, and she said she has relished the opportunity to lead and learn as editor of Nevarmore this year.

"I wanted to apply to the Summer Academy for more experience and more training in journalism. My goal is to learn as much as possible and hone my skills," she said. "I believe the camp will help me learn how to write intriguing articles to both draw in more readers and potentially more staff.

"It is an honor to be accepted to this camp, and I hope that it will aid me in bringing out the full potential in the Ravenscroft Nevarmore."

Congratulations to Carter, Sarabi and all of the talented Upper School students who have been involved with the school newspaper.
