A Lasting Legacy: Ravenscroft Honors Jeff Walker ’97

On Friday, Sept. 25, everywhere you looked, the presence of Jeff Walker ’97 was felt.

His schoolmates greeted one another with hugs, sharing stories of their time at Ravenscroft with Walker.

Jane Walker, Jeff’s mother, talked about the good fortune of perfect weather, hinting that Jeff made sure the rain held off so everyone in attendance could enjoy the evening. There was a tribute table filled with memories of Walker’s time at Ravenscroft and his accomplishments after graduation, including becoming a pilot and a dad. The event was especially meaningful for Jeff’s 8-year-old daughter Bridget, who at one point called Friday the best day of her life.

Walker passed away suddenly in 2024, but on this beautiful September evening, hundreds gathered to honor him.

Family, friends, classmates, teammates and community members were all on hand as the turf field in front of the Middle School was  officially named Jeff Walker Memorial Field.

Walker played football and lacrosse for Ravenscroft, and listening to those who knew him best, there was no doubt how much he loved the school. When it came time to honor him, putting his name over the field where he played made the most sense.

In less than three months, alumni from the Classes of 1997 and 1998 led the effort to raise nearly $1 million. The field stands as both a tribute to a beloved Raven and a transformative upgrade to Ravenscroft’s athletic program. A gift from The Ravenscroft Athletic Club (RAC) helped seed and solidify the project.

The Jeff Walker Memorial Field name will be recognized on the press box tower and via a plaque at the field’s entrance.

Ellen Mann O’Connor ’98 officially dedicated the field on behalf of the Board of Trustees.

“Jeff represented the best of Ravenscroft,” O’Connor said. “He was a force of nature on this campus. He was a leader whose warmth, humor and dedication left an indelible mark on everyone that he met.”

O’Connor added that Walker’s name over the field will ensure future generations of Ravens always remember the standards Walker set and the values he held.

Just off to the side of the steps near the press box, a plaque dedicated to Walker will be placed on the wall. An additional plaque will greet guests at a separate entrance to the field.

Director of Athletics Ryan Holleman shared his thoughts on the field’s impact on athletics and the community.

“Beyond daily practices and games, this field will have the opportunity to serve as a central gathering place for our entire school community by hosting events like our upcoming inaugural family movie night on Nov. 5,” Holleman said. “Whether gathering for a movie under the stars or competing under lights, this field now stands as a vibrant tribute to community, grit and excellence.”

A True Leader and Success Story

Voted “Most Likely to Succeed” his senior year, it’s fitting that Walker’s peers had the vision to glimpse into the future. Walker had a landscaping business while he was at Ravenscroft and kept his entrepreneurial spirit after graduation. He also prioritized putting others first, which he modeled as an Eagle Scout and as a Wake County firefighter.

“Jeff succeeded in so many ways,” legendary Ravenscroft Football Coach and former Director of Athletics Ned Gonet told the crowd. “As an athlete, as a student, as a leader, but more importantly, as a son, brother, husband, father and a true friend.”

Following the official dedication, Jeff’s wife Meg, Jane Walker, Bridget, Head of School Derrick Willard, Michael Anderson ’98 and O’Connor cut the ribbon before Walker’s name was revealed on the press box.

Anderson played lacrosse with Walker. The two worked together and remained close friends until Walker passed away. Anderson assured Jane Walker that the support for Jeff would never stop. He then shared fond memories of his time with Walker, both on and off the field.

“We spent a lot of time together,” Anderson said. “But I like to remember Jeff as a student here. I just think it really embodied who he was, which was such a well-rounded person. He was an athlete, he was a student, he had a really good time and he volunteered. I think this creates the perfect opportunity to share Jeff’s legacy, now and forever here at this place. I think he represented the school in a very incredible way.”
