Seventy-eight Ravenscroft students in the Class of 2020, 41 in the Class of 2021, and three in the Class of 2022 earned AP Scholar status in recognition of their exceptional achievement on Spring 2020's Advanced Placement® exams.
The College Board's Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school. As a result of their successful performance on AP Exams, students earn college credit, advanced college placement, or both.
These exams were given in May and June of 2020, when North Carolina was under a statewide shutdown in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and Ravenscroft had shifted to remote delivery of instruction. As explored in a recent Ravenscroft Magazine story, Upper School AP teachers worked closely with students to wrap up course content and prepare for the exams, which were modified by College Board to accommodate an at-home testing process.
"From seamlessly switching class discussions to a virtual platform to preparing students for the new at-home, online format of the exams, our teachers made great use of new digital tools from the College Board to supplement their own lessons and ensure students were prepared for their AP exams," Head of Upper School Aaron Sundstrom said of the successful transition. "It was a tremendous show of both faculty and student resilience."
A strong indicator of this success is that, despite the changes, the number of Ravens being recognized for outstanding scores on the spring exams is comparable to previous years.
"There was no gap" in instruction, Lia Prugh, Co-Director of College Counseling, said of Upper School students' experiences last spring. "The students were immediately in remote classes with very similar expectations to their on-campus classes."
The College Board recognizes AP Scholars at the following levels:
- Fifteen Ravenscroft students qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average score of 4 or higher (on a 5-point scale) on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.
- Fifty-two of our students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
- Twenty-five students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams; and 45 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher.
