Coach Greg Warren and the veteran lineup of the varsity boys swim team won the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Championship Swim Meet on Monday, Feb. 10, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

“Our boys team had an incredible day,” head coach Greg Warren said. “It was a total team effort, and I could not be more proud of their accomplishment of winning a state championship. Charlotte Latin has such a strong team, and they took the lead early on and held a larger-than-expected margin midway through. Our team took control in the back half of the meet, and they were able to claw their way back to be within 4 points heading into the final event, the 400 Freestyle Relay. Winning that race against Latin secured the team for the overall win. It was such an amazing moment for our team and school!”

This marks the team’s 13th state championship, with past championships occurring in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003. The boys team finished first place overall with 339 points. The varsity girls swim team placed 10th overall with 68 points.

In the 100 Fly, Mattaus Rammel ’26 set a new NCISAA record in the prelims with a time of 47:59 and earned first place in the meet with a time of 47.68.

Together, the team set several new school records for relays:

  • The 200 Medley team of  Jackson Bubar ’25,  Frank Hassell ’25, Mattaus Rammel ’26, David Davis ’28 set a new school record with their time of 1:33:61
  • The 200 Freestyle team of  Frank Hassell ’25, Jackson Bubar ’25, Kaleb James ’25, Drew Davis ’25 set a new school record with their first-place time of 1:25.51
  • The 400 Freestyle team of Mattaus Rammel ’26, David Davis ’28, Kaleb James ’25, Drew Davis ’25 set a new school record for their first-place time of 3:03.82

“I’m still in disbelief,” Drew Davis said of the experience. “Winning by one race meant every single swim leading up to the finish was the difference between first and second place in the meet. Everybody came prepared to win, and I am so grateful for every one of my teammates and coaches whose contributions were all crucial.”

The Ravens have been on quite a run! Many of these swimmers are repeat champions in TISAC events in relays and individual events and the team earned the title of TISAC champs, with Mattaus Rammel named Most Outstanding during that meet. Four seniors have plans to continue their swimming careers in college: Kaleb (Howard University), Drew (Bucknell University), Jackson (Davidson College) and Frank (Monmouth University).
