On Monday, Oct. 25, Ravenscroft golf standouts Garland Gould ’24 and Brooke Smith ’22 competed in the NCISAA State Championship at Bryan Park - Players Course in Greensboro. Both players qualified as individuals for the championship. Garland shot a 2-over 74 to place 5th overall and earn All-State honors for the third time in her Ravenscroft career. Brooke shot an 11-over 83 to place 16th overall out of 40 Division I competitors.

The varsity girls golf team wrapped up their regular season on Oct. 19 in the Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference Championship at The RGA Golf Club. The team placed fifth overall in the conference. The Ravens’ top round was posted by Brooke Smith ’22, who shot 81. Both Brooke and Garland earned All-TISAC honors based on their season-long performance.

For Garland, it was a strong finish after what she characterized as a “season with a lot of growth opportunities.”

“I was unable to play at Conference this year due to illness, and that was a real disappointment for me because I couldn’t be there to compete with my team and, unfortunately, we ended up finishing 7th in our division, just missing the cut for States,” she said. “Fortunately, I had the opportunity to compete as an individual representing Ravenscroft at States, and I was excited to finish 5th.”

Coach Matt Zeblo said of Garland’s season, “Garland was a steady presence for our squad all year long. Her hard work and dedication to her golf game are evident in the scores she puts up each and every round she competes in. She has that rare combination of talent and desire to improve every facet of her game. It has been a pleasure to witness the growth she has displayed in her golf game from seventh grade, when she entered the program, through her sophomore year. The sky's the limit for this player, and we’re lucky to have her.”

As Brooke, a senior, wraps up her high school golf career, Zeblo said her “positive energy and attitude is infectious amongst her teammates and playing partners.”

“It has been an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to coach Brooke for her entire career here at Ravenscroft. She has been such a great teammate, leader and player,” he added. “She’s been an awfully good player for us, as well as being a four-time All-Conference performer and two-time All-State performer. It goes without saying that she’s been a big part of our team’s success these past four years. It will be difficult to see her leave our program, but I know she’s well prepared for the challenges ahead.”

“I believe that every single player on our team has great potential to succeed in years to come,” Brooke said. “This year was mostly foundation building and about having a good time — both of which were achieved.”
