Evelyn R. Stevens, 90, passed away on May 31, 2023. She served Ravenscroft as the Lower School library assistant for 38 years.
Stevens grew up in Augusta, Georgia, and moved to North Carolina in the 1950s. She was very involved with her church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, directing dramas in the old chapel and serving as the church librarian at Millbrook Baptist Church for many years.
Her work at Ravenscroft was a reflection of her love of books. During her time in the Lower School, she painted many murals for the faculty, staff and children to enjoy. When she retired in 2012, her many Ravenscroft friends (the “girls”) stayed in touch and continued their lasting relationships.
Stevens was a fan of the Carolina Hurricanes and enjoyed gardening. She also loved celebrations and special events with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Richard L. Stevens, of Raleigh; her daughter, Pam Stevens (husband, Jarrett Terry); her grandchild, Melissa Stevens Kirkendall (husband, Trevor Kirkendall); her great-grandchild, their son, Gavin Kirkendall; and her sisters of Hephzibah, Georgia, Vivian C. Danforth and Ellen Woods (husband, Forrest Woods). She was predeceased by her son, Douglas M. Stevens; her sister, Virginia Williams; and her brother, Jack (Bud) Danforth, Jr.
A celebration of Stevens’ life will be planned for a later date. Read her full obituary and share memories and condolences with the family here.
