Longtime Ravenscroft teacher Margaret Moss passed away peacefully at age 94 on Jan. 21, 2021, at her residence at The Rosewood Health Center (The Cypress) in Raleigh. She is survived by three sons — Jim, Bill ’74 and David ’77 — and their families, including seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A graduate of Meredith College, Margaret had a distinguished career in education, including 16 years at Ravenscroft, 1969-1985. She was best known for her special ability to teach first-graders the joys of reading and for inspiring many of them to become teachers themselves.
“She was a dear and very gracious woman,” former Lower School Director Carol Miedema said. “With her caring manner and dedication, she taught her first-graders not only to read and compute but to consistently demonstrate kindness to one another. Her gentle spirit was felt among her team and all of Lower School.”
“Margaret was a mentor to many and a gracious hostess for all Ravenscroft teachers to socialize and build lasting friendships,” Betsy Beals, who taught Lower School physical education, said. “What fun we had together at the 150th celebration of Ravenscroft in 2012.”
In 2005, Bill and his wife, Mary, who have both served as Ravenscroft trustees, honored Margaret’s legacy and the memory of Mary’s mother with “Grandmothers’ Walkway,” the covered sidewalk that connects Holding Hall Lower School to Winston Library. The inscription reads, “Dedicated to Grandmothers who share with children the joys of reading.”
“It’s a lovely memorial to her, as she led the way for many children to read and learn,” Carol Miedema said. “Every time I walked that way, I thought of her and her gifts. May she rest in peace, having left a remarkable family legacy.”
A private interment will take place at Zebulon Town Cemetery, and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Read Margaret’s obituary here.
