Doug Brit '98 and Coach Jimmy Cox
Coach Jimmy Cox was named an honorary Ravenscroft alumnus with his induction into the Class of 1862 during the Alumni Awards Celebration on May 16, which kicked off Alumni Weekend.
The Class of 1862 Award was established in 2000 to honor school employees and volunteers for dedicated service and support, whether in direct work with students or behind the scenes.
Doug Britt ’98 played for Coach Cox twice on the Green Boys Basketball Team, as well as on Cox’s 1998 state-champion boys golf team.
“In Lower School, he wasn’t just ‘Coach Cox.’ He was Batman. Every Halloween Carnival, he squeezed into that thick, heavy suit — much to our delight. But even better, he wore it again for the Special Olympics later in the year, when the heat could be brutal,” said Britt. “That willingness to trade personal comfort for a child’s joy is exactly why he deserves this award — his unwavering, personal sacrifice to enrich the Ravenscroft community.”
Britt’s remarks perfectly captured Coach Cox’s legacy. He spoke of Cox’s dedication, his impact on school culture and his ability to strengthen the community — explaining that Cox has mentored students from Lower School through Upper School and into adulthood. He also acknowledged how Cox adapted to each generation while remaining a steady, supportive presence.
“You made us all better people. We’re grateful for your tireless commitment and the lasting impact you’ve had on the Ravenscroft community.”
Cox was then presented with the award by Alumni Council President Anne Forsyth English ’98. The room erupted in applause as alumni spanning his entire 42-year tenure stood to recognize an incredible coach, mentor and friend. Coach Cox joins a distinguished group that now includes 12 members — several of whom were in attendance to celebrate with him, including Doreen Kelly, Carol Miedema, Michelle Piette, and Barbara Jean Warren.
Congratulations, Coach!!
