The Ravenscroft varsity wrestling team competed in the Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference Championship on Thursday, Feb. 11, at Cary Academy. Six Ravenscroft wrestlers earned a conference championship in their weight class, with three more finishing as runners-up.

The team came in second overall in the conference and will head to the state championship tomorrow.

“We were incredibly proud of how the guys competed at the conference tournament,” Coach Garrett Cummings said. “While we were underdogs this year due to depth and injury issues, we saw every wrestler compete with courage and perform near their peak for the season. We challenged each guy from a technical standpoint and even switched some weight classes, strategically, and they stepped up to meet the challenge.

“We ended up celebrating with the most champions and all entered starters in the finals match. Hats off to Cary Academy, who have a solid team this year and have obviously worked very hard as well.”

Congratulations to these conference champions by weight class:

  • Neil Nainani ’24 (106)

  • Mikey Leaf ’25 (120)

  • Henry Kopf ’23  (126)

  • Maks Bitman ’24 (132)

  • Alejandro Alston ’23 (138)

  • Eric Belcea ’22 (160)

Second-place finishers were:

  • Nate Ogan ’24 (113)

  • Tosh Holdstock ’22 (152)

  • Slade Goller ’24 (182)

The team will compete at the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association state championships starting Friday, Feb. 18, at Providence Day School in Charlotte.

“We hope to continue to perform at a high level this weekend at states and cap off what has been a tremendous season of growth for our wrestlers at the individual level, if not a banner year for us as a team,” Cummings said. “Henry will look to defend his NCISAA title up two weights this year, while Eric, Alejandro and Neil are seeded in the Top 4 of their respective weights.”

Good luck, Ravens!
