While their final semester at Ravenscroft didn’t unfold as they had expected, the Class of 2020’s determination and resilience in the face of unexpected hardships made the school community and their families proud, and as they approached their final milestones — the conferring of diplomas and entry into the Alumni Association — they continued to embody the character, good humor and close personal connections that have marked their time as Ravens.
Senior Dean Kat Belk, giving her traditional speech to the senior class via a recorded message, said it this way: “You have made lemonade out of lemons. You have taken a really difficult situation and turned it into so many positives. This is how my generation knows the next generation is in good hands. We believe in you, we believe in your spirit, we believe in your resilience. This test of your character will make you stronger as you face future adversity. And guess what — there will be better days ahead.”
While traditional commencement exercises have been postponed due to statewide pandemic directives, school leadership and members of the Class of 2020 worked together to plan an event that would give each senior their moment in the spotlight. Head of School Doreen Kelly, Associate Head of School for Academics & Student Life Colleen Ramsden and Head of Upper School Aaron Sundstrom conferred diplomas individually in Jones Theatre as proud parents and guardians looked on. The ceremonies — 107 in total — took place Thursday, May 28-Sunday, May 31, and were shared on Livestream. Family and friends were able to join in and congratulate each new graduate via Zoom.
