  • Genko (Tom) Maekawa ’27

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced more than 16,000 semifinalist

candidates. These academically talented seniors now have an opportunity to compete for 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $24 million, which will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, students must fulfill several requirements in order to advance to the finalists level. To become a finalist, the semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, where they provide information about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

From the 16,000 semifinalists, approximately 15,000 students are expected to advance to the final round.
