Nine Upper School Students Represent Ravenscroft at Model U.N. Conference
Daniel Munns

This fall, nine Ravenscroft Upper School students attended CAPSMUN (Capital Area Public Schools Model United Nations) at Broughton High School. In this Voices Piece, Model U.N. Club Advisor Daniel Munns and eight of the students reflect on the experience.

This fall, Broughton High School hosted CAPSMUN (Capital Area Public Schools Model United Nations) — an engaging and educational conference designed to bring together students from across the region for a day of diplomacy, collaboration, and global awareness.

This year’s conference marked an exciting milestone as Broughton welcomed middle and high school delegates to participate in a variety of committees that simulate the work of the United Nations. Students took on the roles of international diplomats, researching and debating pressing global issues and crafting innovative resolutions through teamwork and negotiation.

The goal of CAPSMUN is not only to spark interest in world affairs but also to foster key skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, leadership, and empathy. Under the guidance of experienced chairs, the delegates had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of complex global challenges while forming lasting friendships and connections with peers from other schools.

Throughout the day, the students engaged in committee sessions, attended opening and closing ceremonies, and enjoyed opportunities for collaboration and reflection. The conference emphasized inclusivity and accessibility, welcoming both experienced delegates and newcomers to the world of Model U.N.

The advisors of the Model U.N. Club and Upper School faculty, Daniel Munns and Lucy Liversidge, took nine Ravenscroft Upper School students to the conference to represent Ravenscroft. Below, eight of the students reflect on their experiences.

While I had taken the Model U.N. elective in seventh grade, this was my first actual conference. It was fun working with like-minded people! I made so many friends and it was a really good experience!

For most of the Ravenscroft students, this was a first and it was for me. Even though there were moments that I felt confused, I was able to figure it out with help from many other students who attended the conference. It was a really fun experience for me. I will continue to participate in Model U.N. events because of the good experience I had at Broughton, thanks to the Ravenscroft facility, student leaders and students from other schools.

Attending the Model U.N. conference at Broughton was a lot of fun! I enjoyed working with my committee, brainstorming ideas, and having everyone get a chance to voice their opinions. It was a great opportunity to step out of my shell and confidently share my own thoughts. Participating in Model U.N. sparked my love for debate, and it’s definitely something that I will continue to do throughout my high school career.

— Sebastian Barroso 29

I joined Model U.N. as a way to expand my involvement on campus. I had no expectations coming into the club or the conference; however, after speaking for the first time in my committee room, I immediately gained confidence and a sense of self. I have already established my love for politics and diplomacy, but this conference truly solidified these interests. I also made new friends, expanding my connections with people who also love Model U.N. I am grateful for having the opportunity and I am excited to continue participating in this club and conferences.

— Kathryn (Kate) Gregory 28

Going into Model U.N., I was nervous to try something new I had never done before. The senior leaders were so helpful and encouraging going into our first conference, and I felt motivated and excited to represent my school. The club is very organized, and a great way to meet new people!

— Grace Louis 28

I was nervous to participate in Model U.N. for the first time, but I felt properly supported by the club leaders, Mr. Munns, and Ms. Liversidge. I had a blast at the conference and was able to become closer to those who had similar interests to me while also learning more about global relations. I’m really grateful to have had this opportunity!

This is my second year in Model U.N., but my first year participating in a crisis committee. In this committee, I worked with other delegates to write the Treaty of Versailles, and adjusted to new spontaneous conflicts that arose around the world (invasions, attacks, new alliances, and more). It was a great experience to do this for the first time in a room with other beginners, where we could all learn together. At the end of the day, I felt more confident thinking on my feet and adapting to new issues that arose.

— Cole MacKinnon 26

Along with the other senior leaders, I participated in the crisis committee working toward the Treaty of Versailles. I was surprised by the spontaneity and chaos that ensued, compared to the General Assemblies I had previously participated in, but I found it engaging. Overall, it was a fun experience and provided a good foundation for the Chapel Hill conference we are attending in February!
